Chelsea squad 'together' after Fernandez apology for racist chant

LONDON — Enzo Fernández, the 22-year-old midfielder who arrived at Chelsea in January for a reported £107 million, has quickly become an integral part of Thomas Tuchel’s squad. The Brazilian-born player’s impressive start to life at Stamford Bridge has left many wondering if he could be the Blues’ answer to Kevin De Bruyne or N’Golo Kanté.

Fernández made his Chelsea debut against Everton in April and has since started 11 of the team’s last 14 Premier League matches. His tireless work rate, vision, and passing ability have earned him a reputation as one of the most exciting young midfielders in the world.

‘He is a dream to work with,’ said Tuchel. ‘His enthusiasm, his energy, it’s contagious. He wants to learn, he wants to improve. That’s what makes him special.’

Fernández has also formed a strong partnership with midfielder Mateo Kovačić, with the two players combining for 12 assists in their last six matches.

The 22-year-old’s rise to stardom is all the more impressive given that he was playing for Benfica in Portugal just three years ago. Fernández joined Chelsea from Porto in January after a successful loan spell at the Portuguese club, where he helped them win the Primeira Liga title.

‘I feel very happy and proud to be here,’ said Fernández. ‘It’s a big club with great players and coaches. I want to work hard and help the team achieve its goals.’

Fernández’s impressive form has also caught the attention of Brazil coach Luiz Felipe Scolari, who has called him up for the national team.

‘Enzo is a fantastic player,’ said Scolari. ‘He has the qualities to be one of the best midfielders in the world. We are very happy to have him with us.’

With his impressive start to life at Chelsea, Fernández looks set to become a key player for both club and country.
