U.S. stays alive with big win over New Zealand in Olympic men’s soccer

The United States men’s soccer team staved off elimination with a thrilling 2-1 victory over New Zealand on Saturday at the Tokyo Olympics. The win keeps the US alive in the tournament, as they advance to face Spain in the quarterfinals. The Americans fell behind early when a Joe Chapman goal gave the Kiwis a 1-0 lead. However, the US equalized just before halftime through an own goal by New Zealand’s Liberato Caceres. In the second half, the US took the lead for good with a strike from Matthew Hedges in the 71st minute. The victory marks the first time the US has advanced to the quarterfinals at the Olympics since 1992. ‘We’re thrilled to be moving on,’ said US coach Charles Kazlauskas. ‘This is an incredible feeling.’ The win also marked a significant turnaround for the US, who had struggled in their opening two matches, drawing with Sweden and losing to France.
