Ryan Reynolds on Why the Original ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ Film Title Was Changed

During an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Ryan Reynolds revealed that the original title for his 2016 film Deadpool was Wolverine: The Origin of Weasel. The joke stemmed from a conversation between Reynolds and Hugh Jackman about their characters. Reynolds shared the story during a game of ‘Guess What?’ on the show.

Reynolds explained that he and Jackman had previously discussed how their characters, Wade Wilson/Deadpool and Logan/Wolverine, could coexist in a film. The conversation led to the idea for an origin story focused on Weasel, Deadpool’s best friend played by T.J. Miller.

In the game, Kimmel asked Reynolds to guess what Jackman had written on a piece of paper. Reynolds took his time before finally guessing that it would be ‘Wolverine: The Origin of Weasel’. This led to Kimmel and the audience laughing at the absurdity of the title.

The original title for Deadpool was later changed to simply Deadpool, which was seen as more fitting for the film’s tone and character. Reynolds’ appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live was part of a promotional push for his latest film, Free Guy.
