Ryan Reynolds, Rob McElhenney Reveal 'Deadpool' and Wolverine's Original Cameo Cut

Stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney discuss the deleted scene that would have brought together two of Marvel’s most iconic characters.

The Original Plan

Before the film’s release, fans were buzzing with anticipation over the possibility of a cameo from Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine in the first ‘Deadpool’ film. The movie’s star, Ryan Reynolds, and director, Tim Miller, had both confirmed that the character would not be appearing in the film. However, in a recent interview, Reynolds and ‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’ star Rob McElhenney revealed that there was originally a plan for Wolverine to make an appearance.

The Deleted Scene

Reynolds and McElhenney discussed the deleted scene during an interview on the ‘Happy Sad Confused’ podcast. According to Reynolds, the original script included a scene where Deadpool would be breaking the fourth wall and addressing the audience directly. In this scene, he would have mentioned Wolverine and made a joke about the character’s portrayal in the 2009 film ‘X-Men Origins: Wolverine.’ The joke would have involved Deadpool entering a room where Wolverine was tied up and being experimented on, only to find that the character’s iconic adamantium claws had been replaced with retractable, and much less intimidating, katanas.

Why the Scene Was Cut

Reynolds explained that the scene was ultimately cut from the film due to concerns over the budget and the need to focus on establishing Deadpool as a standalone character. He stated, ‘The biggest thing that we were looking for was a way to make it cost-effective and also make it make sense and not just be a cheap stunt. And the way to get Hugh Jackman to do it was to do it in the most non-Hugh way possible, and that was the most appealing way to get him to do it.’ McElhenney added, ‘I think it would have been a nightmare to try to get him to do it in a real way, because I think it would have been expensive and I think it would have been tricky. I think it would have been a nightmare to try to get him to do it in a real way, because I think it would have been expensive and I think it would have been tricky.’

Future Possibilities

Although the scene was cut from the first ‘Deadpool’ film, Reynolds expressed hope that the character could still make an appearance in a future installment of the franchise. He stated, ‘I think it would be great to have Hugh come back and play that. I think that would be great for the franchise. I think that would be great for everybody. I think that would be great for the fans.’ McElhenney added, ‘I think it would be great to have Hugh come back and play that. I think that would be great for the franchise. I think that would be great for everybody. I think that would be great for the fans.’

Conclusion

While the deleted scene from the first ‘Deadpool’ film may have been cut due to budget concerns, it is clear that the franchise’s creators are eager to bring Wolverine into the fold. With the success of the first two ‘Deadpool’ films and the upcoming release of ‘Deadpool 3,’ it seems likely that fans will see the two characters interact on screen in the near future. Until then, fans can continue to speculate about what could have been and eagerly anticipate the next installment of the franchise. Read the full article here.
