‘White Dudes for Harris’ call raises over $4 million

Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) has set a fundraising goal of $4 million by the end of June for her 2024 presidential campaign, but some donors have expressed frustration that many of those who’ve contributed are white men.

According to a report in The New York Times, Harris’s campaign is relying heavily on donations from ‘white dudes’ to help reach its goal. While it’s not uncommon for campaigns to target specific demographics or groups of people for fundraising efforts, some donors have taken issue with the emphasis on white men.

One donor told The New York Times that he was initially excited to support Harris’s campaign, but became disillusioned after noticing that many of the people she was targeting for donations were white men. ‘I’m not sure what they’re trying to do,’ the donor said. ‘Are they trying to make me feel like I’m some kind of ally or something? Because it just doesn’t seem right.’

Another donor echoed similar sentiments, saying that while she appreciated Harris’s commitment to diversity and inclusion, she found it jarring that the campaign was actively seeking out donations from white men.

Harris’s campaign has not publicly commented on the issue, but some political observers have speculated that the emphasis on white donors may be an attempt to appeal to more moderate voters who might be turned off by the candidate’s progressive policies.

Regardless of the reason behind it, some donors are expressing concern that the campaign’s approach could alienate potential supporters and create a perception that Harris is not committed to diversity and inclusion. It remains to be seen how this will impact her fundraising efforts going forward.
