Gabriel Jesus 'changed a lot of things' heading into pre-season as Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta reveals Gunners star has found his 'spark' again

When Mikel Arteta took over as Arsenal manager in December 2019, he inherited a team that had just suffered a disappointing eighth-place finish. The Gunners were in need of a spark, and it wasn’t until the arrival of Gabriel Jesus during pre-season that they finally found their fire again.

Jesus, who joined from Manchester City for a reported £45 million fee, was seen as the key to unlocking Arsenal’s attacking potential. And boy, did he deliver! The Brazilian forward played in all seven of Arsenal’s pre-season friendlies and scored four goals, including the winner against Chelsea.

The impact Jesus had on the team was evident from the opening match. He brought a level of intensity and work rate that the Gunners lacked under Unai Emery. His movement off the ball was exceptional, causing defenders to commit and creating space for his teammates.

Jesus’ ability to play anywhere across the front three also gave Arteta options he didn’t have before. He could play Jesus as a traditional striker, or use him as a left or right winger, where his pace and agility allowed him to beat opponents with ease.

The Brazilian’s pre-season form carried over into the league campaign, as he scored four goals in his first five Premier League appearances. His partnership with Bukayo Saka on the left flank was particularly impressive, with Jesus’ hold-up play allowing Saka to make runs behind defenses and create chances.

Jesus’ arrival has been a game-changer for Arsenal. He’s brought a level of excitement and unpredictability to their attack that they lacked under Emery. The 24-year-old is still adjusting to the Premier League, but his early form suggests he’ll be an integral part of Arteta’s plans for years to come.
