Vance defends ‘sarcastic’ ‘childless cat ladies’ remarks amid blowback

Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.) on Tuesday faced backlash over comments he made about Democratic Senate candidate Morgan Phillips Vance, where he jokingly referred to her as a ‘childless cat lady.’

During an appearance on CNN’s ‘New Day,’ Scott was asked if he had any advice for Vance, who is running in a competitive special election in Ohio. The senator responded by saying that Vance should ‘get married and have some kids’ and not ‘just be a childless cat lady.’

The comment sparked widespread criticism on social media, with many accusing Scott of making a sexist and ageist remark.

Vance’s campaign also issued a statement condemning the comment. ‘Senator Scott’s attempt to belittle Morgan Vance by reducing her to her personal life is not only unfair but also harmful,’ said a spokesperson for Vance’s campaign. ‘Morgan Vance is a strong, capable leader who has dedicated her life to public service and deserves respect.’

The backlash against Scott’s comment comes as Vance faces a tough re-election battle in Ohio. She is running against Republican author J.D. Vance in the special election, which is expected to be a close contest.
