LONDON — Enzo Maresca, Chelsea’s new director of football development, has inherited a complex project at Stamford Bridge. The Blues are in the midst of a significant rebuilding phase after a disappointing 2022-23 season, and Maresca is tasked with finding a balance between giving young players opportunities and maintaining the team’s competitive edge.

The Italian, who replaces Mario Melchiot as the club’s top football development executive, has been impressed by the talent and dedication of Chelsea’s youth academy. He believes that the key to success lies in giving these players the right guidance and support to flourish.
