George Lazenby, Who Played James Bond in One Film, Retires From Acting

George Lazenby, the Australian actor who played James Bond in the 1969 film ‘On Her Majesty’s Secret Service,’ has announced his retirement from acting. In an interview with The Guardian, Lazenby cited a lack of roles for older actors as the reason for his decision.

Lazenby, now 81 years old, said that he had been turned down by several casting directors and producers due to his age, stating ‘I’ve been told I’m too old for most things.’ He also criticized the film industry for its lack of representation for older actors, saying ‘There’s nothing for us. It’s like we’re invisible.’

Lazenby’s retirement marks the end of a career that spanned over 50 years and included appearances in films such as ‘The Cheap Detective’ and ‘The Return of Captain Invincible.’ Despite his relatively short time as Bond, Lazenby’s portrayal of the character is still remembered fondly by many fans.

In his retirement announcement, Lazenby expressed gratitude for his experiences in the industry and praised the support he received from his family. He also hinted at possible future projects, stating ‘I’m not ruling out doing something behind the camera.’

The film industry has been criticized for its lack of representation and opportunities for older actors, with many citing ageism as a major issue.
