Where Arsenal's eight centre-back options stand now after Calafiori arrives

Mikel Arteta’s future at Arsenal is hanging in the balance as the club prepares to announce the signing of highly-rated Italian defender Riccardo Calafiori. The 20-year-old left-back has been impressing for AC Milan’s youth team and has caught the eye of Gunners boss Arteta, who is desperate to strengthen his squad ahead of next season. According to reports, Arsenal are on the verge of completing a deal for Calafiori, with a medical set to take place in the coming days. The signing would be seen as a major coup for Arteta, who has been under pressure following a disappointing Premier League campaign. Despite leading Arsenal to FA Cup success last season, Arteta’s future had been called into question after a 10th-place finish in the top-flight. However, securing Calafiori could help to ease some of the pressure on the Spaniard, and demonstrate that he is committed to building a team capable of challenging for major honors. Calafiori has already made his debut for Italy’s under-21 side, and has been touted as one of the most exciting young players in European football. He would become Arsenal’s third signing of the summer, following the arrivals of Albert Lokonga and Marquinhos.
